Enabling Access to Life-Changing Music Experiences

Southampton Music Trust (Registered Charity No. 1176179) was set up in December 2017 to support the aims of Southampton Music Hub to improve access to music education and to provide life-changing musical experiences for the communities of Southampton and its surrounding areas.

The charitable objects of Southampton Music Trust are:

To advance education in music for the benefit of the public in Southampton and surrounding area by:

  1. providing and assisting in the acquisition and provision of facilities, instruments, scores and other means of performance and study and places for such purposes;

  2. promoting and facilitating access to performances of, and participation in, performances of music;

  3. making music education more accessible through, in particular but not limited exclusively, community music programmes.

Southampton Music Trust and Southampton Music Hub share a common belief that making music helps make people’s lives better.

Southampton Music Trust supports Southampton Music Hub, helping every child, family and community access life-changing music.

Supporting Young Musicians Facing Challenging Circumstances

The Middleton Bursary Scheme

The Middleton Bursary Scheme provides financial support to individual musicians, to help them overcome challenging circumstances which may prevent them from accessing music-making.

The Middleton Bursary Scheme, offers a number of small bursaries to individual young musicians (or, in some circumstances, groups of young musicians), aged 5-25, living in Southampton, Isle of Wight, or other surrounding areas, and who are facing challenging circumstances that are preventing them from accessing music-making. Through the scheme, Southampton Music Trust furthers our aims: to enable access to life-changing music experiences that enrich the happiness, health and wellbeing of the communities of Southampton and the surrounding areas.

Music can make a huge difference to children and young people: helping them develop new skills; improving their wellbeing; and connecting them to others. Donations to the Middleton Bursary Fund help Southampton Music Trust to support other young musicians facing challenging circumstances in their lives.

Kindly supported by:

How We’re Making a Difference

Southampton Music Trust is supporting children and young people in challenging circumstances this year to help them access and progress in music-making which reflects their interests and ambitions. The trust is delighted to share examples of the success of young musicians they have supported this year.

A young rapper has been having one-to-one sessions at the music studio, to support them as they are not currently in school. At the start of the year, they were working on creating backing tracks in GarageBand, but over the past year, they have developed their interest and passion for rap. In response, the music hub connected them with an expert rap tutor to help them develop their skills and confidence in writing, performing and recording their own lyrics.  They told us:  “listening to my new tracks compared to my old ones, I can hear how far I’ve come. I’ve improved my skills, and I’m feeling more confident too”.

A young rapper has been having rap sessions each week, continuing on from last year. This year they have made huge progress, even as life around them has been difficult. They told us the highlight of the year was performing live for an audience for the first time, getting the whole crowd joining in.

A young songwriter  has been having music sessions each week this year, joining online from home, as school is not the right place for them. Their songwriting and production has greatly improved this year, taking on many more roles in the process for themselves, and making good progress week by week. They write songs about their experience of autism and mental health challenges, alongside creating music for their youtube videos.

Thank you to our supporters!

Our work is only possible because of the generous donations we receive. This  year we’ve gratefully received donations: in memory of Kenneth McGillivray; and Anonymous Donations. We have also supported the hub’s funding applications to: Paul Hamlyn Rap and Literary Project; Music Mark; and Youth Music.
